The paradise draw of San Clemente

...My first glimpse of San Clemente was from a slow-moving passenger train when I was about 12 years old. I had no idea where I was, and I had never even heard of San Clemente.

I remember vividly my first view of the swaying palm trees, the wooden pier, the endless sand, the colorful umbrellas, the waves, and the surfers in the water. To me, this looked every bit like an enchanted paradise, where everyone was on vacation! And when I waved to the people, they waved back!

This image was in front of me for only a few seconds, but it was the stuff dreams are made of, and I will never forget it.

On that train, I promised myself that I would find out the name of this charming place and would one day return to visit. It didn't occur to me that I might actually aspire to live here one day. Somehow, it seemed too fantastic a vacation spot to actually have permanent residents.

It took a few years for me to return. First a visit with a girl friend to show her the image in my dreams, and later a permanent move to live here with my family.

...As a permanent resident, I find I sometimes take for granted what I took for rapture as a 12-year-old. So, every morning for the last few years, I walk along the sandy beach to the wooden pier, get my coffee, stand under the palm trees, and wave to the people in the slow-moving passenger trains, especially the young ones.
